Practicing in the Heat by Tina Mickelson

Practicing in the Heat
by Tina Mickelson, The Santaluz Club Ambassador

I give our members credit for their dedication to practice but there are some things to factor into those practice sessions, especially in the heat. When playing a round of golf, keep in mind that you have a few minutes between each shot to relax, think about the next swing, and enjoy a gust of ocean breeze before stepping up to address the ball for your next shot. When practicing, most players don’t take enough time in between each swing to asses the last shot and then give the next ball their full attention. In the heat this can make a practice session futile.

During the summer months it is a good idea to shorten your practice sessions, but heighten your concentration. In other words, make each minute count. Take a few extra seconds between swings on the driving range while ensuring that each shot has a specific purpose: Aim at a specific green or flag and pay attention to distance as well. Give each shot full effort and attention instead of just beating ball after ball until you feel like you have hit enough.

End the practice session on a high note and before you have hit your wall. Many players hit too many balls and the practice session ends with a bit of frustration and lack of confidence stemming from exhaustion and not lack of swing improvement.
